Focaccia Centro

A good sandwich is harder to make than it looks, and it's usually in what goes between the bread that it falls apart. So I was pleased to find out that Focaccia Centro makes its own sauces and fillings. The place in central Alingsås is small and stripped-back, and it doesn't try to be anything other than somewhere you buy a sandwich, in this case on focaccia with an Italian touch. There's nothing wrong with that. Outside there's a small outdoor seating area for anyone who'd rather sit out. The ingredients felt fresh and the flavors were right where they should be. It's in the filling and the sauces that the place earns its spot here, and you can tell nothing comes ready-made out of a tub. Two things would have lifted it further. The sandwiches could happily have been a bit bigger, and I say that as someone who rarely leaves anything on the plate. The bread could also have been a notch better, and with that name above the door, the bread has something to live up to. But they're good sandwiches, no doubt about it. The staff were friendly, and despite the small space it was easy to relax and linger over the food. There are no pretensions to more than that, and that's exactly why it works. If you want a quick lunch in town that's still made with care, this is a good choice. If the weather is on your side, take your sandwich and a beer out to the outdoor seating. If you're really hungry, it may be wise to plan for more than one sandwich. One thing to know beforehand: the opening hours are something of a mystery. There's no website, nothing on social media and nothing posted on the door, so expect to take a bit of a gamble. Putting the hours up somewhere would be a simple thing to do, and it would make it easier to find your way back.
