Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap

Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap is one of those places you hear about long before you get to Berlin, and one that actually lives up to the hype. I wanted to experience the real Berlin döner experience, and this is one of the original spots, so it felt obvious to head here. A little tip right off the bat: I arrived at 10:15, roughly when they open, and the line had already started building up with about five people ahead of me. The concept is stripped-down and to the point, a little kiosk by Mehringdamm that has done one single thing really well and become almost an institution in Berlin. It's street food at its finest, with a focus on döner and the characteristic Gemüse variety with grilled vegetables. You can tell this is a place that built its reputation on delivering a high level of exactly what it does, and the feeling is genuinely Berlin rather than tailored for tourists, even though half of Berlin seems to be standing in line. The kebab itself is really good, for me one of the best places to get the authentic Berlin döner experience. It's the kind of food that makes you understand why people are willing to queue. The prices are also low, so you get a whole lot of tasty food for your money. Here it's all about eating with your hands, on your feet, and enjoying the fact that something so simple can be so good (you can also head to the neighboring park and sit down by the Berlin Wall to eat). The atmosphere is exactly what you want from a classic döner spot. Simple, fast, and with an energy that comes from there always being people around. Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap is highly recommended if you want the real Berlin döner experience. The food is fantastically good, the price is low, and the place has a natural spot among Berlin's original institutions. Come early, ideally right at opening, so you can avoid the worst of the lines. Queuing for an hour isn't worth it in my opinion, but coming here when it's calmer definitely is.
